it uses DNS query and if u get response fro dns server, u have internet.
no data included per Microsoft. but I would not trust them, so u can run wire-shark and capture DNS packets.
you can search the Internet how to disable it in registry, make backup first, just in case of .....
Link above mentioned 2 steps; I did not see step 1 but got step 2 on No Internet NIC/link. maybe I missed it. Windows 10 has a bit different website name then Win 7.
